after a short trip to the UK, I arrived in austria
again yesterday afternoon, I wish plane journeys would get easier...

Ugh what a journey, at dusseldorf the plane transfer
was awful, don't know why, but the first plane landed in a different place to usual, and there was no easy route that I saw of without going round the whole loop, I ended up crying at the x ray machines (which when the plane is in a sensible place I don't need to go through) this was cause by now I was already supposed to be at the gate, and the queue was really slow, they were running things over everyones body as well as walking
through the thing, on top of that staff kept pushing in to go first!! I didn't have the buggy (checked straight through from
plane door to prevent delaying second plane) so poor Dylan was either running, being dragged, or under my arm rugby ball style!

Anyway, finally get through, not the last one, there were others I
recognised from the first plane.

Got to Vienna, well you know I said the buggy was checked through? well, it didn't arrive, everything else did. I went to the desk, they checked and it wasn't there, they took all my details, looked at my boarding cards and luggage receipts (its a good job it was checked  through in a way, as there was no time to collect at plane, and the deliver to aircraft tags don't have final  destinations on them!) when they simply said it would be
delivered to me as soon as it arrived I burst into tears again, saying how on earth was I going to get me, the luggage and a small tired child home? (Thad was waiting the other side but that was beside the point) so she kindly went and found me an airport buggy, which was awful, didn't steer well, didn't lie down and gave me sores on my hands, but at least it did the trick, Dylan fell asleep part way home, as he was exhausted too
(which was why I was sure I needed a buggy) shame I had to push it on its rear wheels only where possible, so that he wasn't doubled over (flopped)

today at 6:30 we get a call, buggy will be delivered by 9am! and it was, the security tag on it says found at DUS (dusseldorf)
RUSH to VIE (vienna)

so somehow, whilst all my other luggage was transferred
form one plane to the next, that wasn't? nevermind, I have it now :)

forgot to say by flowergrrl (5.00 / 1) #1 Wed Jun 16, 2004 at 07:24:34 AM EST
today I worked out that Dylans head circumference is around -7 standard devaitions. Not that a measurement makes any difference, but it kinda shocked me a little.

For about 18 months, Mr Mini Mouse had to see a doctor several times on account of the fact that his head size was in the 99.95 percentile for his age.....
Thats probably +4-5 sigma (I think).

IIRC they were initially worried about the possibility of hydrocephalus (or something like that). Now they're just satisifed he has a large cranium, althought what it's full of I don't know, as his younger sister seems more intelligent.....

Look for the guys in neckties and only SMALL airline logos (if any) on their shirts. Go to them and 'splain things calmly and in a nice tone. They will solve your problems.

Gate checks: Anything that shouldn't have been let through as hand luggage or anything that won't fit because of all the other crap everyone dragged on the plane, plus certain things like buggies/prams, wheelchairs, delicate musical instruments without flight cases and the like, are gate checked. they don't have tags because they're to be unloaded at the next airport and picked up by the owner. They usually only need three to five minutes to "deliver" them to the door, since that hold is right by the jetway stairs.

You didn't wait so they tagged it, held it, waited for the "lost item" report, figured out where it was to go to next and sent it on its way ASAP. By then it was way too late to make your short connection. Usually you'd have to wait for the next plane of theirs flying from DUS to VIE plus a few hours to get that. You lucked out, something strange to say about a 6:30a.m. call.

How long are you there for? I'm in Munich.

noo, I was told that I would not get my buggy back in dusseldorf, and to take myself and my son as quick as I could to the gate.

this is quite normal, I fly around every 4 to 6 weeks, and sometimes they do arrange a delivery at aircraft for me, but this is rare. I once had a four hour wait between flights, where they refused to get the buggy out for me cause it was checked through.... (I don't get a choice as to what they choose to do at the start of the flights)

Its ok, i don't shout at anyone, after all, its not their fault, and I am often heard to be apologising for crying (I am also pregnant so rather emotional anyway) If it weren't for the fact that I was frightened of losing my space in the queue (many many people joining the queue) I would have crept round the front and asked very nicely if I could go through next as the plane was waiting

I half live in Vienna with codemonkey_uk (my husband) I will be here for 2 weeks, then in spain for 10 days, back again for a few days, then off to the UK for 6 weeks, then back to stay for a large chunk of time (in which I will give birth to baby no2)!!

thanks for reading

I thought I recognised the nick by BadDoggie (4.50 / 2) #5 Wed Jun 16, 2004 at 08:01:59 AM EST
I would suggest meeting up some time but I seem to be back on codemonkey's shitlist.

What I'm not understanding is whether you checked or gate-checked your buggy. If you checked it in as normal luggage, then no, you can't get it. Most of the system is automated anyway. If you gate-checked it (handing it over to the stewardess at the front hatch as you board the plane), you get it back at the jetway.

If the buggy was checked with the rest of your luggage but didn't make it to VIE, it could've been for a few reasons. When I was leaving MUC to go to LGW a couple weeks ago, I watched a suitcase fall off the cart taking luggage to a plane. It fell from the top, bounced on the ground and over to the side of the road (lots of momentum). I guarantee that piece didn't make the flight.

A buggy might've also fallen out of the luggage system bin or jammed up or been oversized or any one of a hundred different things. The main thing is that you got it back, and in pretty good time. I waited 2.5 days once for a suitcase lost on a direct daily flight. Shit happens.

Your carry-on is for the stuff you must have at all times. It's not for suitcase overflow. Remember this and you will spare yourself much grief and aggro.

well by flowergrrl (5.00 / 1) #7 Wed Jun 16, 2004 at 09:02:28 AM EST
it was a bit of a mix, I was permitted to take it to the plane door, but the buggy had a normal luggage tag on it, as you get on a suitcase! That always means I dont get it back till final destination (sometimes they do have the deliver to aircraft tag, and not only do I always wait, but I let the airhostesses know in advance of landing so that they can help make sure it comes quickly - I'll give em thier due, they do!!)

I can only assume that the person who put it on the first plane wasnt paying attention, and didnt do what normally happens, which is put it with all the other prority transfer baggage, so it was mistakenly sent to baggage reclaim.

I know that it was a pretty quick return, didnt make me feel any better on the day though

so how comes you are on hubbys shitlist? I dont pay any attention to these things!!

have fun

It was more than an ASCII penis by BadDoggie (3.66 / 3) #13 Wed Jun 16, 2004 at 10:27:13 AM EST
It was an ASCII penis that measured over 5100 zeptoParsecs.

You haven't been paying attention.

The post included references to the >5100 zeptoParsec penis (IRC #kuro5hin, #husi), the K5ARP, some other stuff including a self-referential editur jab, plus it was in Iasson's diary.

In the Hole.

Which is deleted after a few months, not archived.

Which is too bad, because it was one of my more difficult ARP rip-offs.

So now you know.

plane journeys by Merekat (6.00 / 1) #6 Wed Jun 16, 2004 at 08:48:58 AM EST
The more I fly, the more annoyed with the whole process I become. I guess the novelty and excitement value of flying wears off pretty quickly with frequency. For you, if you're not going on holidays, there is no anticipation. The flight merely becomes something in the way of your family being together.
